Remarkable Middle School Students

Creative students Brittney Carter, Renee Sauceda and teacher Jodi Gusman from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School came up with their own unique way to help the homeless pets at the Kauai Humane Society by getting permission from Wal-Mart to have a toy drive for our shelter's orphans. These remarkable students in a short 4 hour span got enough donations to help over 85 pets and received roughly $160 in cash donations for our island's less fortunate animals. MAHALO NUI LOA from all of us at the Kauai Humane Society!

Generous Scouts

A special mahalo nui loa goes to Girl Scout Troop # 273 & 851. These kind hearted young women collected used unwanted items and had a garage sale. They took their profits and purchased items to help over 100 of our homeless animals from the"Kauai Humane Society Wish List".

St. Catherine's Puppet Show

Holly Walker’s fourth grade St. Catherine’s School class preformed two puppet shows, "Doggone Safe" and "Think Before Getting a Pet" to their parents and siblings on May 15, 2008. The performance was enjoyed by everyone who shared in the afternoon event. Thank you to Mrs. Walker and her students for their hard work and generosity.

Kapaa Middle School Builders

Kapaa Middle School Jump Start students did a fantastic job building picnic tables from scratch for the Kauai Humane Society’s Off Leash Dog Park. They created the artistically painted tables for hundreds of Kauai families to use during their visits to our park. Sincere thanks goes to all the reliable young men & women and their adult supervisors for their hard work and generosity.

Ling Mui Apples for the Homeless Pets

Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School Jump Start group voted and decided they wanted to raise money to donate to the Kauai Humane Society’s Spay/Neuter and Adopt-a-Pet programs. They came up with a unique way to get the message across and project complete. First they sold Ling Mui apples and peanut butter sandwiches to their friends during lunchtime. Through the efforts of those sales, they raised almost $300 for Kauai’s homeless pets! Then they decided they wanted to spread the word to the public. The group made signs and waved them on the highway for an hour on April 30th. One student said, "If we could get a quarter for every horn that honked, we could be raising thousands of dollars for the homeless pets!"

Kauai Humane Society thanks these ingenious young adults for their sincere assistance in helping Kauai’s animals!

Fourth Grade Puppeteers Teach Keiki

Cherish Yama-Gokan’s fourth grade Kapaa Elementary students were master puppeteers on May 27 & 28, 2008 and taught 100 lower elementary classmates how to be "Doggone Safe" and to "Think Before Getting a Pet". The professional and interactive theater production entertained students while teaching them some safety tips around dogs and the huge responsibility pet ownership is for even the smallest of pets. Puppet replica favors were artistically constructed by the fourth grade students for each child attending the show.

Special thanks goes to their director/teacher Cherish Yama-Gokan and her students for helping spread the humane education word to the young people at Kapaa Elementary!
