» Resources - About Kauai Humane Society.
The Kauai Humane Society was established by the community in 1952 as a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization to protect Kauai’s animals. We opened our new home on Grove Farm property just west of Lihue in 2001 thanks to the generous support of many individuals, families, businesses and foundations.
As an independent and private non-profit 501(C)(3) organization, we rely upon donations, membership, grants and proceeds from our Lihue Thrift Shop. Collaborative relationships with both the County of Kauai and the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative support our law enforcement and Save Our Shearwaters program. We are an independent animal welfare organization and not a chapter of any mainland or Hawaii group.
What is our mission?
The Kauai Humane Society is dedicated to ensuring compassionate, informed care of all Kauai's animals and promoting the human-animal bond.

How do we serve the people and animals of Kauai?

We are the only animal care resource center on Kauai where all animals are welcomed, rescued, protected and sheltered every day, all day.
We are the pet lost and found center for Kauai and offer pet adoption services daily.
We provide convenient subsidized pet spay/neuter services for free to the community to control pet overpopulation.
We provide animal management services for the County of Kauai to maintain harmony with animals in our neighborhoods.
We protect Kauai’s animals by investigating all reports of animal abuse and neglect.
We advocate for animals by promoting effective legislation.
We provide the only pet cremation services for the island.
We provide state approved quarantine services for mainland pets entering Kauai.
We offer a variety of education programs and dog training classes to promote proper care of animals and enhance the human-animal bond.
We are Kauai’s first emergency pet friendly disaster shelter to protect our families in the event of another storm like Hurricane Iniki. Learn more about disaster preparation.
We provide pet boarding services and Freddie’s off leash dog park to members of the Society.
How are we funded?
We work closely with other animal welfare groups nationally and locally to protect Kauai's animals but receive no funding from these organizations. Annually, we apply for a grant from Kauai county government to provide animal management services and a low cost pet spay-neuter program for Kauai residents. Our other community services and programs are funded by our Lihue thrift store, fees for services, grants, and donations from supportive and generous individuals, businesses and community organizations. We receive no state or federal funding.
