What do we do?


In the summer of 2001, we moved from Hanapepe to our beautiful new home just west of Lihue where we provide many community services in addition to sheltering lost and homeless pets:

  • Adoptions and pet owner support programs
  • Advocacy and legislative action to improve laws protecting animals
  • Animal cruelty and neglect investigations
  • Animal pick-up services island-wide
  • Animal rescues 24-hrs. daily
  • Deceased animal removal from public roadways
  • Discount spay-neuter coupons for services with private veterinarians
  • Dog bite prevention enforcement and education
  • Dog licenses and pet microchip identification services with free central registry
  • Dog training classes for all ages of dogs year round
  • Education and enforcement of county animal ordinances
  • Freddie’s Off Leash Dog Park for Society members
  • Free spay-neuter services for low-income residents and feral cat colonies
  • Host the Therapeutic Horsemanship of Hawaii program
  • Humane animal trap borrowing services
  • Humane education for children and adults including Critter Camp
  • Lost and found reporting and recovery services for pets
  • Meeting room space for other agencies and non-profit organizations
  • Pet cremation services
  • Pet friendly emergency evacuation shelter
  • Pet support program for owners with debilitating illnesses or injuries
  • Pet visitation to hospitals and long-term care facilities
  • Private pet boarding services for Society members
  • Recycling of used clothing and household goods at our Lihue thrift store
  • Resolution of neighborhood animal-related problems through education, mediation and enforcement
  • Safe refuge and protection for pets threatened by domestic violence
  • Save Our Shearwater rescue, rehab and release services for endangered seabirds
  • State approved quarantine services for mainland pets entering Kauai
  • Volunteer program for children and adults in all areas of shelter operations, advocacy, community outreach, humane education, pet visitation, special events, veterinary services and at our thrift store
